10 days in Ecuador: Quito, the cloud forest, then the islands

Most itineraries bolt Ecuador onto Galápagos as an airport layover. This one is the opposite: it uses Quito as the base, adds the Mindo cloud forest as the middle chapter, and finishes in the islands. We build this exact trip at our hotel, so the sequencing below is tested rather than theoretical: and the order matters: cloud forest first, islands last, so the trip ends on the archipelago’s high rather than on airport logistics.

Day 1: Arrive Quito

• Land, transfer to a hotel in or near the old town (Quito sits at 2,850 m; take the first day gently for the altitude).
• Evening: the old town lit up, dinner near Plaza Grande.
• Note for the Galápagos leg: buy the TCT ($20) online or at the airport counter tomorrow, and keep your park fee cash ready ($200 adult foreign, $100 per child under 12; see the entry fee guide).

Day 2: Quito old town

• Morning: the colonial centre, one of the first UNESCO World Heritage sites, the Compañía church and the Plaza Grande carry it.
• Afternoon: the Mitad del Mundo monument or the TelefériQo cable car for the Andes view.
• Practical: confirm your Galápagos flights (Avianca and LATAM fly Quito–Baltra and Quito–San Cristóbal; most Quito flights make the technical stop in Guayaquil).

Days 3-4: Mindo cloud forest

Two hours and a different Ecuador later, you drop off the Andes’ western slope into cloud forest. This is our home turf:

• Birding at first light: hummingbird feeders with a dozen species at one table, and the cock-of-the-rock lek at dawn. Ecuador’s cloud forest is one of the world’s birding peaks; Galápagos is the archipelago’s show, and this is the mainland’s.
• Waterfalls and the cable car over the valley; chocolate-making at a local farm; the butterfly farm if children are along (entry fees here are modest: the Mariposas de Mindo butterfly garden runs about $8.50 for adults and $5 for children, and the Nambillo waterfall sanctuary entrance around $5, current public prices 2024-2026).
• Nights at Las Terrazas de Dana, our boutique hotel, decks over the forest, mist off the ridge, nothing scheduled after dinner. If you only take one day of Mindo, make it the morning birding.

Day 5: Return to Quito, fly to Galápagos

• Morning transfer to Quito airport (2 hours), TCT and baggage inspection for organic material, fly to Baltra or San Cristóbal.
• The biosecurity check is strict: no food, plants or seeds. Pay the $200 park fee at the airport counter on landing.
• Transfer to Puerto Ayora (bus, canal ferry, taxi) or straight into town if you land at San Cristóbal.

Days 6-7: Santa Cruz

• Day 6: Tortuga Bay in the morning, the walk, the iguanas, the calm lagoon, and the Charles Darwin Research Station in the afternoon.
• Day 7: the highlands (El Chato, lava tunnels, Los Gemelos) by taxi, or a full day boat tour to North Seymour or Bartolomé ($220-280, check current rates).

Days 8-9: Isabela or San Cristóbal

Pick by taste, honestly:

• Isabela (ferry 07:00): Los Túneles snorkel day, Sierra Negra if you still have hiking legs, beach and wetlands otherwise. $10 local fee on arrival, cash only on the island.
• San Cristóbal (ferry 07:00 or 15:00): Kicker Rock snorkel, the free Tijeretas-Interpretation Center circuit, the highlands loop (El Junco, La Galapaguera, Puerto Chino).

Day 10: Fly to Quito, connect home

• Morning ferry or town airport → flight to Guayaquil or Quito.
• Book the international departure for the evening or the next morning; the 10-day shape works because Galápagos sits at the end, but do not cut the connection to minutes.

Why this order (and why this combo barely exists)

Two reasons the itinerary runs cloud forest → islands: altitude acclimatisation (do the 2,850 m first, not after a week of boats), and energy. Mindo is the decompression chapter; if it came after Galápagos you would sleep through the birds. Per person excluding international flights: Galápagos fixed costs ($450-620 with two ferry legs), Quito and Mindo days are the affordable half (cloud forest lodging runs well below island prices; check current rates with us directly), Galápagos hotels $25-150 per night by class, tours as priced above.
