Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, located on the southwestern side of San Cristobal Island, is the capital town of Galapagos Province and it is the oldest settlement on the islands. Founded in the mid 1800s, it was named in honor of Alfredo Baquerizo, who was president of Ecuador three times and the first president to have visited the island. Famous for its stunning views, the town is a center for surfing, scuba diving and wildlife watching. Punta Carola beach with its ten-foot waves is a top attraction, but the town also offers other beaches for all levels.
