The Arnaldo Tupiza Tortoise Breeding Center, located on Isabela Island, is a short walk from Puerto Villamil (1.5km). As their environment is threatened by other animals or by volcanic eruptions, 5 native subspecies of Galapagos Giant Tortoises are bred here: Cerro Paloma, Cazuela, Cinco Cerros, San Pedro, Tables and Roca Union. They have a special hatchery for incubating the eggs and special corrals where the adult Giant Tortoises are looked after. The purpose of this breeding center is to make sure that this unique and amazing Galapagos species is preserved, by increasing the population.
